Longshot of the Day: Race 6 at Horseshoe Indy
Track: Horseshoe Indianapolis
Race 6: $41K allowance going 1 mile on turf for 3+ Indiana-bred
Post Time: 4:45 PM ET
Horse: #13 Mackadoo (8/1 morning line) use as a win bet at 5/1 or higher.
Picking last out maiden winners can be a bit tricky, but I like the value Mackadoo brings as he draws into this state-bred allowance race as an also eligible. Trainer Greg Foley had been trying to get this son of Harry’s Holiday on the turf for a while as he was entered in a pair of turf route maiden races this winter down at Fair Grounds, but both were rained off. He eventually made his way back up to Horseshoe Indianapolis to run in a 5 ½ furlong sprint, which does not appear to be his game. Last time out, he finally got on the grass going long against state-bred maiden special weight company and broke his maiden while running a career-best 58 Beyer Speed Figure (BSF). The perk up over his recent form in which he previous two starts had earned BSFs in the low 40s makes you believe that he finally found his right surface and distance, which is not surprising considering his sire is producing 21% winners going long on the grass. Today, he steps up against winners for the first time and is in the far outside post, but you are getting good morning line value on him at 8/1. I like playing horses who have a perk up off a surface switch in their next race when it’s a step up in class, so I love playing this angle as you should get close to that morning line price. Foley is a solid trainer, and Mitchell Murrill is a good jockey, so you can trust the connection to have the horse prepared and get a solid ride. The horse got a maintenance work leading up to the race and had a solid running style where he should be sitting no worse than mid-pack and likely gives Murrill the ability to cross over a decent amount of the field to save ground going into the first turn. The final piece that should be noted is he broke his maiden over a turf course rated “good,” which is the same rating the turf course at Horseshoe Indianapolis has today, so he can handle ground with some give and has won under these conditions.
