Week two of racing at Assiniboia Downs is underway and really intrigued by Mr. Splash in the bailout race for all you insomniacs and West Coast horse players. Nearly every horse in the race is coming off a layoff except for one who has been racing in claiming races at Will Rogers Downs. The promising part is Mr. Splash’s trainer, Devon Gittens, does well off these long layoffs that are traditional at Assiniboia Downs as he has won at a 22% clip with a $2.73 ROI over the last year. The son of Manitoba sire Nonios had an aggressive juvenile campaign as he broke his maiden in a stakes race going six furlongs in his third career start and finished the year hitting the board in a pair of stakes races. In five career starts, he has yet to miss the board and has displayed a versatile running style. He flashed good speed to stay near the lead in sprints and then managed to come from well off the pace in the Buffalo Stakes last year where he got off slowly and nearly passed the entire field before coming up a half length short at the wire. That sort of versatility gives jockey Rachaad Knights gives him plenty of options at the break and Knights has won a cool 40% of his mounts during the first week of racing at Assiniboia. Mr. Splash probably needs to take a step forward on Beyer Speed Figures (BSF) to win on Tuesday night, but he has been training well and could take a big step forward from two-to-three in his 2025 debut. It is common to see horses move forward at this point and I think he provides the best possible value in the field.
