Longshot of the Day: Race 8 at Belmont At The Big A

Track: Belmont at the Big A

Race 8: Gallant Bloom (G2) going 6 ½ furlongs on dirt for 3+ fillies & mares

Post Time: 4:10 PM ET

Horse: #4 Scalable (6/1 morning line) use as a win bet at 9/2 or higher.

Do we have a full day of racing for you at Belmont at the Big A? We have a $110,000 Pick 6 Carryover. We have a $5,000 Hit & Split promotion on NYRA Bets for the Late Pick 5. And, oh yeah, Rebel’s Romance is running in Race 5 in the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic.

Let’s get a price in that Late P5 sequence that can help in your P6 carryover as well with Scalable for trainer Todd Pletcher. The daughter of Speightstown was graded stakes placed before she finally broke her maiden as a three-year-old, but rounded into great form toward the middle of her 2024 campaign as she won the Monmouth Oaks (G3) going two turns before winning the Interborough Stakes in January going seven furlongs. She has not run since, but that should not be a concern to you. Why? Because Todd Pletcher is fantastic at bringing horses back from long layoffs in these spots. Scalable hasn’t run in 240 days, but over the last five years, Pletcher is a remarkable 6-17 (44%) bringing horses back from a 200-260-day layoff in graded stakes races. Her placement in the Gallant Bloom speaks to the confidence he has in this filly. While she is not known for having great early speed, jockey John Velazquez hops aboard today for Pletcher and Repole Stables, and I promise you that he will get her out of the gate in good order and into the flow of the race. So long as she does not give herself too much to do coming for home, she should get ample pace to run into as horses like R Disaster, Patricia Ann, and Senza Parole will set some aggressive early fractions. Scalable has always been a filly with talent and has been training well for her return to stakes action. There is one other 6/1 shot in the race that scares me, which is #2 Impel (6/1) for trainer Brad Cox. She’s coming off a victory in the Groupie Doll at Ellis Park and the two horses she beat (Regaled and Alpine Princess) both ran back and improved their Beyer Speed Figures in the Locust Grove Stakes in their next start. Impel is a filly that has always been highly regarded by Cox and rarely runs a bad effort as evidenced by her 8-10 record hitting the board in her career. Either of these two runners offer great value in the Gallant Bloom (G2).
