Thursday’s maiden race at Horseshoe Indianapolis is loaded with longshot possibilities as there are several horses who have every right to step forward to join the ranks of winners. I will highlight a few additional ones to consider after my official selection of Ad Litteram. The three-year-old daughter of Jimmy Creed debuted last month at Horseshoe Indianapolis and ran a very respectable second while earning a 51 Beyer Speed Figure (BSF). She was hung incredibly wide that day having broken from the #11 post and had to fan wide around the far turn to make her move, which ultimately came up a half length short. Trainer Eduardo Caramori is wheeling her back in two weeks, which I view as a positive sign that she came out well and deserves a second crack at it. She showed good speed in debut as she was able to track the pace, which she should be able to replicate again today as there are two potential speed horses, but most of the field is filled with mid-pack runners and closers. You are likely to get an honest price on her as Caramori is a low percentage trainer with limited success in MSW races, but there was plenty to like from that debut and she should have every opportunity to move forward in her second career start. Another horse who is interesting is #13 Quibble (8/1) who drew into the race after scratches and could move forward making her second start off the layoff after finishing third behind Ad Litteram in her first race back eight months. The biggest issue with the daughter of Dialed In is that she appears to be a closer, which is not always conducive to success in these MSW races, though Horseshoe Indianapolis’s homestretch provides plenty of opportunity for horses to make a run. She encountered some issues at the start last time out when she got squeezed back, so perhaps she could sit more forward today and not give herself as much to do. Finally, I think a horse like #4 Mictlan (8/1) could run a big race off the bench having only run once previously last November where she finished third despite having a tough trip. She was a massive price that day (41/1) so you won’t get that price again. I was going to use her as my official selection as she also flashed good speed and seemed to be training well, but she had nearly a month gap in training from April 15 to May 10, though she came back with a very sharp 47.4 second four-furlong workout prior to this race. Any one of these horses could present good value and I will be eager to see how the race is bet and which of these runners gives me the best value.
