Rain washed out my initial longshot selection at Oaklawn, but you don’t have to worry about that in Florence, Kentucky with the all-weather track at Turfway Park. Thank you, synthetic racing!
Maiden races at Turfway are usually a good place to find a longshot and I like Bermuda Triangle and do not think it is too much of a mystery as to why I think this horse can run well. The former $600,000 purchase who is the son of Triple Crown winner Justify is trained by Will Walden and made his debut back in December at Turfway Park. He broke slowly while sprinting 6 ½ furlongs, but the horse appears to be break for distance and should appreciate stretching out to two turns on Saturday night. The encouraging part from the debut was that the horse kept on and improved his position throughout finishing sixth in a field of 12. Since then, Walden has put the horse to work with a series of four workouts over the synthetic track at Turfway Park, which included three straight five furlong works to improving conditioning. He was one of the faster workers in the morning and even showed good speed in a four furlong work back on January 18 going the distance is 48.3 second, which was third of 125. I expect a better performance in his second start and Walden has been winning an astonishing 38% of maiden second starts over the last year. The horse is getting Lasix for the first time and getting a jockey upgrade to Gerardo Corrales who is known for getting speed out of his horses. I think this one could move forward in a big way at a decent price tonight.
