History of the Florida Derby
This Grade I race is held annually for three-year-old horses, and is run at 1+1⁄8 miles on the dirt. As a prestigious prep race for the Kentucky Derby, the Florida Derby has been a part of the official Road to the Kentucky Derby since 2013, and was first run in 1952. It is typically run at the end of March or beginning of April, five weeks before the Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in May.
